What is White Hat SEO?

White hat SEO is the specific techniques and methods used to optimise a website so that search engines, like Google and Bing, are able read them. This is what search engines refer to as acceptable search engine optimisation.

• White Hat SEO conforms to search engine guidelines.
• The content indexed on your website is the same content that a user will see. There is no hidden text.
• No deceptive methods are used.
• You have good quality web pages.

What is Black Hat SEO?

Black Hat search engine optimisation is the techniques used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. These practices will only provide a short term gain in your rankings, but if you are discovered you run the risk of being permanently penalised by search engines. This type of SEO is a short sighted solution resulting in a long term problem. The black hat SEO techniques include on or more of these characteristics set out below:

• Methods used to improve rankings that are disapproved by search engines.
• Showing on version of a page to search engine spiders and another version to human visitors. This unethical method of SEO is called cloaking.
• Using hidden text. This is when you put keywords in white text on a white background hoping to attract more search engine spiders.
• Using keywords, unrelated to site content. This is called META tag stuffing.
• Creating doorway pages which is basically a fake page that the user will never see.

Unethical SEO methods might be tempting, as these methods do work of a while. However, the risk is great and your site could be banned for using Black Hat Methods, permanently.
